Answer:

If you're are being overwhelmed by the number of messages you get from a list, go to your subscriber page for the list and turn on digest mode. This will cause the system to collect messages for you during the day, and mail them out in fewer, larger bundles.

Note: there are two types of digests available -- MIME digests and text digests.
